Discover La Cotte: A Historic Garden Estate in the Heart of Franschhoek
Set on the slopes of the Mont Rochelle mountains, La Cotte Farm spans 32 hectares of vineyards, orchards and protected indigenous veld. Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Viognier climb the mountainside, interwoven with swathes of Renosterveld, an ancient vegetation type whose silvery-grey tones once mirrored the White Rhino that roamed the Western Cape in the 17th century.
This preserved indigenous landscape remains rich in biodiversity. Caracal, grey mongoose and striped polecat move through the veld, while birdlife ranges from Jackal Buzzards to Cape Francolin. Conservation is integral to the farm’s philosophy, ensuring the natural ecosystem thrives alongside agricultural production.
The unirrigated, low-yielding vineyards are sustainably farmed with minimal intervention, allowing the site to speak through the fruit. Hard rock and clay soils dominate the profile, with pockets of sandy riverine soil along the southern boundary where the La Cotte River runs.
Olive groves form a natural border between the Orchard Cottages and the Hotel, while mature fig trees near the Glass House Cottage mark the changing seasons. Under the steady guidance of farm manager Louis Breedt, the vineyards and orchards are tended with care, reflecting La Cotte’s enduring agricultural heritage.
Our Discover page gathers everything that makes La Cotte special – its layered history, immersive gardens, working farm, restaurants, patisserie, bar and varied stays – inviting you to explore the estate at your own pace and experience the Franschhoek Valley from this timeless hillside sanctuary.
THE HISTORY OF
OUR BEAUTIFUL FARM
La Cotte Farm has its roots in the late 17th century, when French Huguenot settlers first arrived in the Franschhoek Valley and began cultivating the land. Over the centuries, the farm evolved from a working agricultural property into the gracious wine and hospitality estate it is today, with its 1836 Manor House, historic water mill and layered gardens bearing quiet witness to generations of change and care.
In our history video, General Manager Mark Dendy Young brings this story to life, sharing the origins of La Cotte, its architectural heritage and
how the estate has been thoughtfully restored and reimagined for modern guests while honouring its past.
Our Mountain
Spring Water
One of the quiet luxuries of staying here is our beautiful fresh water, naturally sourced from a nearby mountain stream and perfectly safe to drink straight from the tap. This exceptional resource is carefully captured and filtered using time ‑ honoured methods that have supported this land for generations.
Every drop used across the property - from your accommodation to the gardens and lawns, the swimming pools, and the laundry facilities - comes from this same precious source. The comfort and surroundings you enjoy are made possible by thoughtful stewardship and a genuine respect for the environment.
By using water with care, we are able to maintain both the sense of abundance and the commitment to conservation that define this place. In this way, the simple act of turning on a tap is part of a larger story: one that honours the landscape, the community, and the guests who choose to share in it.
