Our guest speaker, Alan Weyer, will be sharing “Before the Ships Came: Southern Africa’s Forgotten Story” – Alan Weyer who is an award-winning raconteur whose gift for bringing history, people and place to life have captivated audiences both in South Africa and abroad.
Born and raised in the Eastern Cape, Alan has spent a lifetime collecting and sharing the rich stories of the region. He is the creator of the acclaimed Spirits of the Past storytelling series, was named South African Tourism's Tour Guide of the Year and has received national recognition for his exceptional contribution to tourism and storytelling. Blending humour, history and unforgettable characters, Alan has a remarkable ability to transport his audience through time and leave them thoroughly entertained.
Before the Ships Came: Southern Africa’s Forgotten Story - Long before Europeans arrived, Southern Africa was already home to a rich and complex human story. From our earliest human ancestors to the San hunter-gatherers, Khoikhoi pastoralists and the emergence of Xhosa society, this talk explores how climate, migration, trade, belief, conflict and human relationships shaped the region. It challenges some familiar myths and reveals a past every bit as dramatic, political and deeply human as the colonial history that followed.
Expect an evening of thoughtful conversation, insight, and inspiration beside the warmth of our winter fires.
The talk will be followed by a 3-course dinner in the La Cotte Restaurant, thoughtfully curated to complement the mood of the evening and the season.
